On 12 June, Saarland University presented BIOPYRANIA during its Open Campus day, welcoming around 40 visitors through a series of engaging activities designed to introduce the public to the world of biotechnology and the bio-based economy.

Throughout the event, BIOPYRANIA was featured in multiple formats, including:

  • Two talks focusing on renewable resources and the future role of biotechnologists;
  • A guided laboratory tour;
  • An information stand dedicated to the project and its objectives.

One of the highlights of the day was the laboratory tour, where visitors were guided through the BIOPYRANIA value chain, discovering how woody biomass can be transformed into high-value bio-based products such as biopolymers.

The tour showcased several key steps of the process, including Fibenol-derived sugar and lignin streams, agar plates and bioreactors, providing participants with a closer look at the technologies behind the project. Visitors also had the opportunity to take part in a hands-on demonstration by producing their own polyamide thread, offering an interactive insight into modern biotechnological processes.

By featuring BIOPYRANIA during its Open Campus initiative, Saarland University continues to promote public engagement with research and innovation, helping visitors better understand the potential of biotechnology to support a more sustainable and circular economy.

Events such as this Open Campus play an important role in connecting science with society, inspiring students, future researchers and the wider public to explore the opportunities offered by bio-based innovation.
