BIOPYRANIA’s partner B4Plastics has successfully achieved Milestone 3.
This marks an important step in the further upscaling of two biobased aromatic monomers synthesized from acids obtained from second-generation (2G) woody biomass. These monomers will be used by the University of Maastricht to develop new classes of polyamides (PA) and polybenzimidazole (PBI) as high-performance, environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuel products. This consequently responds to growing industry demands and European sustainability regulations such as the Sustainable Product Initiative (SPI).
This milestone focused on the delivery of 100 grams each of two biobased aromatic monomers in month 8 to support the development of new polymers, promoting a more sustainable and technologically advanced future in strategic sectors such as electric mobility and clean hydrogen.
B4Plastics will continue with further optimization of the synthesis protocols to produce larger amounts up to 5 kilograms of one aromatic monomer that can be tested properly by the partners. The focus will be on increasing yield, decreasing resource use and minimize safety risks and energy consumption while maintaining quality.
